St Helens hold off a strong finish from Wakefield Trinity Wildcats to secure a 20-16 win in the Super League.

St Helens survived a strong finish from Wakefield Trinity Wildcats to come away with a 20-16 win in their Super League match at Belle Vue Stadium this evening.

Paul Wellens made the most of some early possession for the visitors to give St Helens the lead, but Wakefield had a dominant spell before the break, resulting in tries for Matty Ashurst and Reece Lyne to leave the hosts ahead at half time.

The Wildcats thought that they had extended their lead early in the second half, but an obstruction on Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook resulted in the try being chalked off.

McCarthy-Scarsbrook soon had an impact down the other end though as he set up Joe Greenwood for a try, before Jordan Turner put the defending champions back in front.

Wakefield gave themselves some late hope when a chip forward set Richard Owen up for a score in the corner, leaving the hosts just a try behind with 10 minutes to go, but they were unable to find another, despite pressing hard in the final minutes.

The result keeps St Helens second in the table, while Wakefield sit fifth.
