Bath head coach Mike Ford insists that Sam Burgess is still "a long way from where he needs to be" following his switch from rugby league to rugby union.

Bath head coach Mike Ford insisted that Sam Burgess still has a lot of work to do after seeing the former rugby league star produce his finest performance for the club so far.

The 26-year-old started at inside centre in yesterday's 29-26 win against Wasps and crossed over early in the second half to help his side on their way to victory.

Burgess's first Bath try came in a man-of-the-match display, but Ford feels that there is still more to come from the Englishman.

"Sam played his best game but he's still a long way from where he needs to be," he is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

"He didn't do everything right but it's still early days. Straight away he came up and talked about how he needs to get better defensively."

Francois Louw, Semesa Rokoduguni, Matt Banahan and Ollie Devoto completed the rout at the Recreation Ground to leave Bath in second place in the Aviva Premiership table.
