Mike Catt wants to emulate England World Cup success

Mike Catt wants the current generation of England players to repeat the success of the 2003 World Cup-winning side.

England backs coach Mike Catt wants to try to mimic his 2003 World Cup success with the current national side.

Catt toured South Africa with England in 2000, when Sir Clive Woodward's team recovered from losing the first Test to beat the Springboks 27-22 in Bloemfontein.

That triumph was seen as a giant stride towards England's 2003 Rugby World Cup triumph and Catt wants the current generation to make a similar statement when they tour the country, three years before they host the next tournament.

"I have seen both sides of it, the disappointment of losing and then winning in Bloemfontein - the heartland of South African rugby - was something that was very, very special. Not many teams achieve that," said Catt.

"That tour was a massive stepping stone to the success we had at the World Cup. To go down to South Africa and beat them there was a massive confidence boost for us.

"With the culture and everything that Stuart [Lancaster] has there, we now need to take it another level and build it up to the 2015 World Cup."

Catt won the World Cup with England in 2003 and picked up 75 caps for his country.
