South Africa beat England 22-17 in the first match of a three-Test series at Kings Park in Durban.

South Africa have beaten England 22-17 in the first match of the three-Test series in Durban.

England were first off the mark after just seven minutes. Owen Farrell with the penalty to give his side the lead.

South Africa hit back on 14 minutes through a Morne Steyn penalty to draw level.

Farrell helped himself to another easy three points to restore England's lead over South Africa but just two minutes later, South Africa drew level once more with another penalty from Steyn.

South Africa were awarded a penalty just before half time, though Steyn was unable to take advantage. The sides went in at half time with the scores at 6-6.

The Springboks started the second half as the better of the two sides and took the lead in the 48th minute through a Steyne try. The conversion was missed soon after, leaving the scores at 11-6.

South Africa poured forward and were awarded another penalty on 54 minutes. Francois Hougaard decided to take it quickly, though it led to nothing for the Springboks.

Jean De Villiers made it 16-6 on 60 minutes with another try as South Africa took full advantage of their dominant spell.

Three minutes later, England pulled three points back through another Farrell penalty.

On 66 minutes, Farrell hit another long-range penalty to bring the scores to 16-12.

On the 70 minute mark, Steyn restored South Africa's seven point lead with a penalty.

South Africa opened up a 10-point lead on 78 minutes, with Steyn scoring his fourth penalty of the game.

Ben Foden scored a late try just before the final whistle to close the gap, though it wasn't enough as the game ended in a 22-17 win for South Africa.
