Stuart Lancaster reveals Jonny May injury

England head coach Stuart Lancaster tells Sports Mole that the decision to withdraw Jonny May at half time of their defeat to Australia was an enforced one.

England head coach Stuart Lancaster has revealed that Jonny May's withdrawal at half time of his side's 33-13 defeat to Australia on Saturday evening was due to an injury.

The hosts were trailing 17-3 at the halfway stage of the Rugby World Cup clash when Lancaster introduced George Ford, who had been forced to start the match on the bench for the second week running.

As a result, the back line was rejigged, with Jonathan Joseph filling in on the wing, but Lancaster said after the match that the switch was not a tactical decision.

"Jonny May was injured. He had to come off injured, so that was the start point of the substitutions, but he was injured. He couldn't run," he told Sports Mole.

England's defeat means that they are the first host nation to be eliminated in the group stages of a Rugby World Cup.
