Manu Tuilagi apologises after he is detained by police for jumping from a ferry in Auckland.

England centre Manu Tuilagi has apologised after he was detained by police on Sunday night for jumping from a ferry as it was about to berth on the Auckland waterfront.

The 20-year-old has also been fined £3,000 by the RFU and warned about his future conduct.

Tuilagi was taken to Auckland police station just after 7pm before he was given a pre-charge warning about disorderly conduct. Tuilagi was then released back to the England management.

The team were travelling back from a short stay at Waiheke Island, which is known for its vineyards and wine-tasting, although it has not been confirmed whether alcohol was involved in the incident.

"It was a silly thing to do and I apologise to everybody for any inconvenience caused," Tuilagi said in a statement.

Coach Martin Johnson condemned his centre's actions and revealed that the Samoan-born player had been given a warning.

"This was an irresponsible thing to do," said the former captain. "Manu has been disciplined internally and I have warned him about his future conduct."

This latest episode caps a controversial World Cup for Johnson's side after a series of incidents on and off the pitch which marred their campaign.

England were defeated by France in their quarter-final match on Saturday.
