Former Scotland captain Andy Nicol says that interim coach Scott Johnson should not interfere in national team affairs once he becomes director of rugby this summer.

Scotland's coach Scott Johnson should not influence the running of the national team when he moves to the role of director of rugby in the summer, according to former captain Andy Nicol.

The Australian, who is currently the interim coach, will move upstairs when Vern Cotter leaves Clermont Auvergne to take up his position, but the ex-Lions scrum-half believes Johnson should not interfere in the make-up for the senior side.

He told BBC Sport: "He'll be a good sounding board and obviously Vern Cotter will be reporting to the director of rugby.

"So there's got to be open lines of communication. But Scott Johnson as director of rugby in the next year should not be influencing the national team, that has to be Vern Cotter's sole responsibility."

Johnson's Scotland team lost their opening Six Nations clash against Ireland 28-6 before suffering another defeat at the hands of England, who won the Calcutta Cup match 20-0.
