Russia have made their World Cup bow in New Plymouth, going down to the United States of America 6-13.
Yury Kushnarev kicked the Russians into an early three-point lead before Chris Wyles drew the States level.
Mike Petri then scored the only try of the game, a breakaway effort involving Wyles and Roland Suniula.
Both sides failed with long-distance penalties throughout the game before Wyles edged the Americans a further three points clear.
Konstantin Rachkov scored a late penalty for the Russians but despite constant late pressure they were unable to break through the American defence.
Russia next face Italy on Tuesday while the States, who have already lost to Ireland, meet Australia on Friday, September 23.
