Yang Qian of China has taken the first gold medal on offer at Tokyo 2020, triumphing in the women's 10m air rifle event.
Anastasiia Galashina, representing a team of Russian athletes, had a slender 0.1 point lead heading into the final two shots but fluffed her lines at the last, scoring just 8.9 to allow 21-year-old Yang to capitalise.
Switzerland's Nina Christen took the bronze medal ahead of Norway's Jeanette Duestad, while Team USA's young hopeful Mary Tucker put in a spirited performance but could only manage sixth place.
Tucker, who had impressed with two 10.9 scores in the earlier rounds, provided the most dramatic moment of the final as she survived a tense double shootout to secure her place inside the top six.
Earlier, Seonaid McIntosh - Team GB's most successful female rifle shooter of all time - narrowly missed out on qualification for the final, placing 12th out of a field of 50. body check tags ::
