Great Britain's Stephen Milne has set a new personal best to grab a place in tomorrow's 800m freestyle final at the World Championships in Kazan, Russia.
The Scotsman, who is competing in his first ever Worlds, led the way in the early stages of the race, but he dropped to third at the 450m mark.
Eventually, Italy's Gregorio Paltrinieri and Connor Jaeger of the USA pulled away from the field, but Milne was able to clock a new Scottish record of 7:46.61 to finish third in heat five.
In a separate heat, defending champion Sun Yang kept alongside Canada's Ryan Cochrane for the majority of the race, but the two-time Olympic champion surged ahead in the final 50m to clock a time of 7:47.87.
Milne will head into tomorrow's showdown as third fastest.
