A marathon day six at the Australian Open saw British interest in the tournament enjoy mixed fortunes.
Andy Murray overcame Lithuanian qualifier Ricardas Berankis in straight sets but Laura Robson crashed out to Sloane Stephens despite putting up a spirited fightback.
Elsewhere at Melbourne Park the biggest surprise of the event so far saw Juan Martin del Potro crash out to Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.
Roger Federer eased past Bernard Tomic in the evening session before Gilles Simon edged countrymen Gael Monfils in an epic five-set battle.

Tonight we have action from Andy Murray and Laura Robson, but first up is Victoria Azarenka, as she continues the defence of her crown against Jamie Hampton of America.
The winner of this match will face the winner of Elena Vesnina and Roberta Vinci.
It's Jamie Hampton's first time in the third round of a Grand Slam. She reached the second round here last year, as well as at Wimbledon.
Serena Williams is next match on after this one. She takes on Ayumi Morita of Japan. Then it's time for Murray. So fear not, I don't think it will be too long before he's on. If you have stayed up this late, you may as well stay up a little later...
Laura Robson will be on pretty late. Around 5.15am by estimate. But if you can, we'd love for you to join us.
But now down to action, with Azarenka serving first.
A confident start from the American to take the first point, but Azarenka comes back to take the next four points to hold serve.
No signs of nerves so far from Hampton. She goes long with a forehand, but doesn't mind going for another one straight after. Then she nearly finds the line with another, which might have been worth a challenge.
Wow, you cannot give Azarenka an inch it seems. She'll take a mile. Brilliant forehand of her own and we're at deuce.
A good hold from Hampton there. Azarenka got in, but she kept her cool and finished the game off. Still might to have enough to win this, but her forehand looks pretty tasty.
Quick hold from Azarenka. Her first serve percentage reads 100%, which isn't bad...
Couple of break points for Azarenka due to some unforced errors from Hampton...
Azarenka wastes both though. She fired long after a decent rally with the second. You expect Azarenka to win those points of attrition.
BREAK! She doesn't make the same mistake... well, thrice. She gets the break at the third time of asking after Hampton dumps the ball into the net.
Yannina Wickmayer and Maria Kirilenko are underway over on Hisense, while Svetlana Kuznetsova and Carla Suarez Navarro are away on court number two.
I don't think Hampton has quite got enough to trouble Azarenka, especially when she looks in this form. Formidable. A few mistakes, but not sloppy ones really. She's perhaps just going for a bit too much.
As I say that, Hampton strikes a lovely cross-court winner to bring up deuce.
Break point Hampton. Commentator's curse?
Azarenka slams the door shut. She puts in a wide serve, forcing her opponent to stretch for the return. She then comes to the net to kill the point off.
What a rally! Hampton was on the offensive, pulling Azarenka all over the court. Just at the right time, she steps up into the mid-court and dispatches another sweet forehand.
Azarenka replies with a textbook forehand of her own. This has been some great tennis so far...
Hampton flicks a half volley at the net just wide and Azarenka holds. A big hold in the contest of the set, maybe. We'll see if Hampton can hold, and then if she can trouble Azarenka once more. We'll know a lot more at the next changeover.

Superb running forehand from Hampton! Azarenka was completely in control of that point, but a flick of the wrist and she gets the ball back in play. Azarenka wasn't set for it. One break point saved.
BREAK! A simply gorgeous lob by Azarenka. Hampton's approach shot let a little to be desired, but the Belarusian's lob landed flush on the line. She'll serve for the set now.
Two double faults in a row from Azarenka. We're at 30-30 now. Surely she's not getting tight?
Another double fault brings up deuce. What's going on here?
Break point Hampton. Azarenka's first serve deserted her again, and her second was tentative and bounced awfully close to the line.
It was there for Hampton, but her cross-court forehand strays just an inch or two too far! So very close to getting one of the breaks back there.
Another break point for Hampton. She latches onto a short ball, running around to whip the forehand away. But an ace from Azarenka gets her back to deuce.
Break point number three for Hampton. She's certainly testing Vika here.
BREAK! Finally, she gets the breakthrough she probably deserves. She was helped by some really lax play from Azarenka, but still trails by a break in this set.

Hampton wants to bottle that forehand, she could make a fortune. What can she do on Azarenka's serve now?

All the momentum is with Hampton now, but she mustn't take her foot off the pedal.
This time it's Hampton's turn to double. It's her first of the match, but it gets Azarenka to 0-30 up.

SET! A double fault gifts Azarenka the first set. And after all that work to get back from 5-1 down. That's a sickener for the American.
The forehand of Hampton is still in fine fettle. She quickly gets to 0-30 on Azarenka's serve.

BREAK! This time it's the American's backhand that does the job. It was a fine return of serve and she edges in front early in this second set.
Azarenka now has three break points.
BREAK! The Belarusian breaks straight back. It could be 'one of them matches'. The ones where service holds are like breaks.

Brilliant get from Hampton! She had to be on her toes to reach Azarenka's return, but dug out a forehand into the empty court.
You can't do anything with a shot as precise as the one Azarenka just hit. A backhand right into the corner of the box. Deuce.
The American keeps her cool and keeps her nose in front. Work to be done for Vika.
A quick hold to love for Azarenka. Just what she needed.
Well, what she really needs is a break back, but the Hampton serve is susceptible.
Hampton prevails after a decent rally. Azarenka challenges, and it's possible one of the worst I've seen. The ball was about a mile inside the baseline. Clutching at straws.

That was a wayward forehand at a crucial moment from Azarenka. She swipes at the floor with her racquet in frustration.
Wow! Gutsy play from the American. A big second serve helped her set up game point, and she found another forehand winner after stepping up to the net. She's now just one game from levelling the score.
Two set points for Hampton. She brings it up with a quite stupendous forehand return that Azarenka doesn't even see.
Hampton goes long with a couple of shots and we're back at deuce.
Hampton flinches with the finishing line in sight. She misses four forehands in a row, but will now serve to force a third set. Can she hold her nerve?

Hampton has called for the trainer. The problem is with her lower back. She hasn't really been struggling with it, not visibly anyway. A full medical timeout of three minutes has been called for as she leaves the court for treatment.
Hopefully Hampton won't be forced into a retirement. That would be so unfortunate, given that she has the world number one on the ropes.
The American returns to the court, which is great. How much will that problem be affecting her? We're about to find out...
Wow! That was a seriously well-disguised drop shot from the baseline by Hampton. The crowd really are behind her now. But a second drop shot in a row might be a sign that her injury is affecting her...
Two set points for Hampton. Azarenka went too long, but decided to challenge anyway. It was unsuccessful.
SET! We're going to a decider! Hampton grimaced for the first time in the last game. She's getting more treatment at the changeover now.
Hampton finds the corner with another delicious forehand. Another grimace, though. 0-15 on Azarenka's serve.
The American goes for another drop shot, but this time cuts it into the net. Her face is contorting at the end of each point now, I'm not sure how much longer this'll last. It's such a shame, because she has the measure of Azarenka at the moment.
Azarenka holds, but Hampton is hardly moving now.
She's soldiering on though. Credit to her.
Hampton runs around to get on her forehand and casually swipes a winner. Azarenka isn't really taking advantage of this situation.
Hampton was break point down then, but her trusty forehand comes up trumps yet again. She follows that with an ace.
Hampton holds. The 23-year-old from Alabama is giving a fantastic account of herself here, as another forehand passes by Azarenka. That's 22 in total from that side alone in this match.
Azarenka cuts a rather frustrated figure out on court now. She's unable to read the American's forehand, which has amazing disguise on it. Hampton now has two break points...
BREAK! Hampton breaks! Amazing scenes on Rod Laver. The crowd are absolutely loving it, while Azarenka looks ready to burst.
The defending champion is in deep trouble at the moment. Apart from grimaces, Hampton's back doesn't really look to be troubling her.
This is stunning tennis from Hampton.She can put that forehand on a sixpence. But she has to fight off a break point here...
BREAK! And there it is, Azarenka breaks straight back. The crowd hardly clap. They're right behind Hampton in this one!
Quick hold for the world number one. She served up her sixth double fault in that game, but she gets it on the board.
BREAK! Hampton's back problem is clearly evident now, as she swings at the ball rather than the fluid motion we've become accustomed to in this match. Azarenka edges ahead.

Commiserations for Hampton, she played beautifully. What could've been if not for the back problem. She's won plenty of friends in Melbourne and no doubt has a bright future in the game.
But it's the world number one who wins through to the next round, where she will play either Elena Vesnina or Roberta Vinci, who are fighting it out on Margaret Court. It's currently on serve in the first set.
Serena Williams is up next on Rod Laver. She faces Ayumi Morita. I can't see Serena having the same problems that Azarenka just had, but then again I didn't think Hampton had enough to trouble the Belarusian. So what do I know?
As you're no doubt aware, the second part of Lance Armstrong's interview with Oprah Winfrey is currently airing on TV. We have live coverage of that with our Editor, Neil Wilkes.
But at Melbourne Park, Vesnina is serving at 5-4 down in the first set. Both players have broken once.
Juan Martin del Potro and Jeremy Chardy are underway on Hisense. The Frenchman has an early break and is facing the Argentine's serve at 3-0 up.
Andreas Seppi and Marin Cilic have also began their match on court number two.

Right, we're back off to Rod Laver for Serena Williams and Ayumi Morita.
Serena holds in her opening service game.
Super cross-court forehand by Williams. It was offered to her on a plate though.
Williams looked to be in control of that last point. She tends to gain the upper hand when the rallies get beyond a couple of shots. But Morita hung in there and eventually prevailed.
Morita holds, though Williams doesn't look like she's firing on all cylinders just yet. Feeling her way into this one.
Williams serves her second ace. Nothing unusual there.
Morita has clawed it back to 40-30 on the Williams serve. There was a chance for Serena to put the game to bed on that last point, but she fired into the net with an empty court at her mercy.

Ace. That's what the best players do time and time again when faced with break/match points. Awesome.
Superb hitting from Morita. She finds the corner with a a nice double-handed backhand. Deuce.

Serena's serve is a potent weapon, and it came to her rescue a few time in that game. She holds to a 2-1 lead, but Morita looks a wily opponent.

The Sunday Times tennis correspondent Barry Flatman on Twitter: "No wonder Jamie Hampton looked in pain against Vika. She was playing with two herniated disks in her lower back. Hampton has had that condition since last year's French Open."

Williams has stepped up a gear now and is dominating. A 128mph ace brings up three set points.
SET! I don;t think we'll be having to wait too long for Mr Murray. Serena is answering the challenge put down by Maria Sharapova here.

BREAK! Willaims breaks to love... rapidly. Morita's advantage wiped out in an instant, and we're back on serve.
UPDATE! Jeremy Chardy has gone up a break in the second set against Juan Martin del Potro. He also leads by a set. Meanwhile, Seppi and Cilic are involved in a first-set tie break.
Back to Laver, and Serena has comfortably held once again. Morita just can't impact that ferocious serve.

Delpo, facing two set points, has just hit a marvelous cross-court forehand winner. Can he do it again?
SET! Wow, the Argentine is in deep trouble. This match is in Murray's section of the draw. It would of course be a massive boost for the Scot if Del Potro was to be sent crashing out here. Although you can't take anything for granted with the draw - he has to navigate Ricardas Berankis.
There must be something in the air at Melbourne Park today. With Azarenka being pushed hard and Del Potro in a spot of bother, Murray will need no further warning to stay on his toes. I'm sure Mr Lendl is right in his ear in the locker room.
BREAK! Chardy fluffs his lines with a backhand volley at the net. That gives Delpo two break points, and a double fault puts the bow on top of that game for the Argentine. Maybe that's the catalyst for a comeback. We'll see...

The world number three makes it 3-0 and has started in business-like fashion. Berankis looks like he has a few errors in him, while Murray looks cool as a cucumber.

The spin Murray can generate on his slices is absurd. He's taken absolutely no time to settle here and looks in cruise control, even at this early stage.
The Lithuanian gets his first game on the board, but had to work for that last point despite dictating it. Murray's defence is another aspect of his game that's become a major plus point. But Berankis got the job done.
Brilliant double handed backhand down the line from Berankis. Just a snapshot of the ability he has.

BREAK! Sloppy play from Murray. He goes long and wide with a forehand to give Berankis one of the breaks back.
He's switched off Murray. It looked like a potential 90-minute match, but now who knows?
Murray comes into the net but Berankis ties him up with a backhand down the line. Murray couldn't quite stretch far enough.
Murray carves a sliced backhand into the net to give Berankis the game. So, Murray will serves for the set part two.
Superb play from Berankis yet again. He's got the tools this lad. He generates quite a bit of power on his shots and had Murray worried at 30-30.

A 129mph serve brings up set point. That's as fast as Serena's serve earlier. So credit to Serena.
SET! Well he takes the set, but there are definite warning signs. Berankis has grown in confidence and is producing some fine shots. He'll have to be alert in this second set, he doesn't want to go four... or five... or lose...

Murray challenges after his first serve is called out. Unsuccessful, but he leads 40-15.
Berankis this time challenging a call. The ball was called in, but hawkeye shows that it was out. 40-30.
Murray goes into the net. He's struggling at the moment, and not looking very comfortable at all. His shoulder seems to be giving him a few problems as well. Deuce.
Again Murray fires into the net. He's beginning to get frustrated.
I say beginning, he has looked frustrated since the end of the first. Correcting myself. That's sleep deprivation for you.
Superb shot by Bernakis. He swats away another forehand that clips the line on its way through. Deuce.
Murray. Net. Again.
Bernakis fires long after a rally in which neither man really wanted to take the lead. Both players were waiting for the mistake there, and it came from the Lithuanian.
Eventually, Murray manages to hold. He's not having it all his own way here. Berankis is definitely a live opponent, while the Scot doesn't look quite on his game.
An ace rounds off a quick hold of serve for Berankis.

"Come on! Do something" Murray shouts to himself. He needs to step it up here, because this is not the kind of performance he'd have hoped for. 30-30.
Murray holds. His serve is working well for him, and has got him out of a few sticky situations. The errors are prevalent in his game at the moment.
Super point. Berankis brings him into the net with a good drop shot, but Murray is as quick as anyone on tour and reaches it, clipping a lovely backhand wide. However, Berankis is positioned perfectly and clips into the open court.
Murray misses with a forehand down the line and smashes his racquet head on the plexicushion. Things aren't quite going his way at the moment, despite him leading by a set.

Another big serve at a crucial moment from Murray. He needs more though. Deuce.
Great return of serve from the Lithuanian. He stepped up and took it early. Murray stretched for it but was never getting there.
BREAK! Berankis deservedly breaks. He had to take at least one of the chances, by the law of averages. The Lithuanian is the man on top in this set - by score and by performance.

BREAK! Well, that's what separates the good from the bad, I suppose. Murray didn't particularly do much in that last game, bar the final point. Berankis came into the net, and Murray executed a gorgeous lob. The Lithuanian tried a hotdog shot, but he's no Rafa Nadal...
A bit of luck for Berankis, as the net cord takes all the power off the ball and drops it on Murray's side of the net. 30-30.

Berankis took his foot off the pedal after breaking the Murray serve. The Scot has regained a measure of control now, and all the errors are coming from the Lithuanian.

Great point there. Both men were all over the court, with no one really in control. Murray forced the error from Berankis, who fires past the baseline. Another break point.

A beautifully weighted sliced lob by Bernakis, which betrays his lowly 110 ranking, takes the first point on Murray's serve.
The two play some dinky tennis at the net, with Bernakis coming out on top. He's won the battle at the net, has the Lithuanian. Can't take that to the bank, though.
Murray comes into the net to punish a poor drop shot from Bernakis. He has the chance to close out the game on his serve now.

It's not been pretty at times, but Murray has shown glimpses of his real self. The last point was evidence of that. He worked the angle brilliantly before flashing a backhand pass.
Berankis went for a backhand down the line on break point and made it. Murray challenges, but hawkeye shows that it hit the line.
