Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has admitted that he must produce his best form consistently to have a chance of making the latter stages of this year's Australian Open.
Tsonga was inconsistent this morning at Melbourne Park but still had too much for Japanese opponent Go Soeda.
The Frenchman has made the final before in Melbourne and believes that he has enough quality to mount a title challenge.
He told reporters after his second-round win: "It's so hot that it was tough to control the ball. I'm an aggressive player so once I got used to it I recovered.
"I had some trouble in the second set but I kept fighting and used my movement to get the win.
"My preparation has been a little better coming into this season and I have an excellent chance in this tournament but I know I need to play better to trouble the top players."
The seventh seed will play either local favourite James Duckworth or Blaz Kavcic in round three on Saturday.
