Nick Kyrgios has conceded defeat in his attempt to return from injury in time for his French Open opener against Bernard Tomic.
The Australian number one had hoped to make a comeback in Paris after spending time out nursing a chronic elbow problem, ruling him out of singles action for the past six weeks.
Kyrgios will play no part in the second Grand Slam of the year, though, leaving organisers scrambling to find a new opponent for Tomic.
In a statement released on Twitter, the 23-year-old said: "Unfortunately I have to withdraw from this year's French Open. Having consulted with my team and medical experts it is deemed too risky for me to step out and potentially play 5 sets on clay, especially as I have not played a singles match in nearly two months.
"I've worked hard to be ready and desperately wanted to play Roland Garros, which is very special to me but I literally ran out of time."
Kyrgios, who described himself as "80%" fit after teaming with Jack Sock in Lyon at the weekend, will next be in action at the Mercedes Cup in Germany from June 17.
