Former French Open finalist Sara Errani booked her place in round three of the Sydney International courtesy of a 7-5 6-2 victory over Lauren Davis.
Davis, 20, was making her debut at the tournament and held her own during the opening set, which appeared to be heading for a tie-breaker.
However, in the closing stages Errani broke, before going on to hold her own service game to take a one-set lead.
From there, the world number seven took control of the contest and two further breaks during the second set saw her wrap up the match in one hour and 31 minutes.
She will now take on Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova for a place in the next round.
