David Ferrer has booked his place in the third round of the Miami Masters after overcoming the challenge of American Taylor Fritz.
After failing to build on his quarter-final appearance at the Australian Open, Ferrer was expected to face a tough examination from 18-year-old Fritz, who is regarded as one of the biggest prospects on the ATP Tour.
Throughout the opening set, Fritz displayed his potential and had a set point against the eighth seed, but once that was saved, Ferrer gained the upper hand in the contest.
The 33-year-old came through a tight tie-break before racing through the second set to seal a 7-6 6-1 victory, which sets up a last-32 clash with Frenchman Lucas Pouille.
