Liam Broady has suffered an agonising three-set defeat to Ivan Dodig in the first qualifying round for the Citi Open.
The British number five had two match points in the final set before his Croatian opponent fought back to register a 6-3 3-6 7-6 victory.
It was the experienced Dodig who dominated the first set, but Broady kept his composure to strike on his only break point in the second to ensure that the contest went the distance.
Broady broke for a second time to give himself a chance to serve for the match, but Dodig dug deep to level the encounter at 5-5 before it continued through to a tie-break.
Dodig saw an early lead cancelled out by Broady, but the 30-year-old held his nerve during the closing points to edge out the 21-year-old.
