Former world number three Nikolay Davydenko has advanced through to the second round of the Valencia Open with a three-set success over Frenchman Gilles Simon earlier today.
Davydenko claimed the opening set 6-4, only for Simon to reply with an identical success in the second set.
The deciding rubber was more straightforward for Russian Davydenko, who completed a 6-4 4-6 6-3 victory.
The loss has dented Simon's hopes of forcing his way into the world's top eight in time for the ATP World Tour Final in London next month.
