British number one Heather Watson has been knocked out of the ASB Classic in Auckland following a second-round defeat to Holland's Kiki Bertens.
The Guernsey-born 20-year-old, who overcame fifth seed Sorana Cirstea in round one, lost 6-4 3-6 6-3, despite her opponent being ranked 14 places beneath her at 63rd in the world.
Watson converted five of 12 break-point chances during the match, which lasted two hours and 14 minutes.
She will remain in Auckland, as she and partner Marina Erakovic have reached the quarter-finals of the doubles event.
