Marin Cilic battled back from a one-set deficit to book his place in the second round of the Shanghai Masters thanks to a 4-6 6-3 7-6(4) victory over Wu Di this afternoon.
There was 215 ranking spots between the two players at the start of play, but that did not prevent 24-year-old Di from claiming the opening set.
The 2014 US Open champion Cilic responded by winning the second set, yet it was still not straightforward for the Croat in the decider.
Di actually forced one match point when leading 6-5, but he was unable to convert it and Cilic took full advantage to win through in the tie-breaker that followed.
Cilic will now take on fellow countryman Borna Coric for a place in the last 16.
