Johanna Konta has recorded victory over Kurumi Nara to get Great Britain back on level terms in the Fed Cup against Japan.
The two nations are competing in a promotion playoff tie in Miki, and Anne Keothavong's side got off to a poor start as Heather Watson lost 6-2 6-3 to Naomi Osaka.
However, Konta - who has endured a disappointing run of form on the WTA Tour - came through by a 6-4 6-2 scoreline against Nara in the second singles rubber.
Sunday's play will begin with the doubles rubber before the reverse singles are staged to decide who advances in the competition.
Both teams are looking to gain promotion to World Group II, with Britain having not featured at that stage since 1993.
