Sports Mole brings you live commentary from day one of the US Open at Flushing Meadows, where the likes of Andy Murray and Roger Federer will be in action.

Good afternoon and welcome to Sports Mole's live commentary from day one of the US Open in New York.

This tournament marks the last chance for a player to win a Grand Slam title this year and as a result it promises to be an exciting fortnight at Flushing Meadows.

Today the likes Andy Murray, Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka will all grace the courts.

We'll have EVERYTHING covered for you right here over the next few hours.

5.56amWell that's that for day one from Flushing Meadows. There has already been plenty of drama, grit, blood, sweat and determination on show, as well as some flashes of class from Andy Murray and Roger Federer. Novak Djokovic begins his defence tomorrow - so join us from 4pm!

5.54amAnd there it is! Devvarman saved two break points but couldn't stop Hidalgo profiting from the third. The Spaniard is through.

5.51amIt's now Hidalgo who is threatening at 0-30. Neither man seems to want to hold onto his serve.

5.47amHe breaks back at the first time of asking.

5.47amThree break points for the Indian to save his US Open skin.

5.46amDevvarman has Ramirez Hidalgo at 0-30.

5.44amThe Spaniard has broken through and will now serve for the match.

5.41amSo day one at Flushing Meadows comes down to Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo and Somdev Devvarman.

5.39amCilic seals victory with an ace. Job done. Scare over.

5.38amDevvarman has broken back against Ramirez Hidalgo. The Indian is looking to end a run of three first-round exits in recent tournaments.

5.32amCilic consolidates the break of serve by holding to love. One more game and he has suceessfully completed his comeback from two sets down.

5.31amSince reaching the final in Florida, the Australian has pretty much lost any time that he has come up against quality opposition. Although, he does have one more high profile scalp to his name - that of Richard Gasquet at Eastbourne.

5.29amCilic breaks to go 4-3 in front. He is closing in on victory now.

5.29amMatosevic made the final in Delray Beach, Florida this year - beating Ivo Karlovic, Alex Bogomolov Jr, Ernests Gulbis and Dudi Sela along the way. He eventually lost to Kevin Anderson.

5.25amRamirez Hidalgo is a break up in the fourth set against Devvarman.

5.24amCilic has won both of his five-setters in this calendar year - against Sam Querrey at Wimbledon and against David Nalbandian in the David Cup - an ominous sign for Matosevic.

5.15amCilic comfortably holds serve. 2-2.

5.11amThe momentum swings in favour of Matosevic now. He holds serve as Cilic carves into the net.

5.09amThe Croat responds with some hefty blows of his own. Advantage Cilic.

5.08amThe Aussie saves another one with a ripped forehand.

5.08amMatosevic saves a break point, but Cilic has another and is knocking on the door.

5.06amDevvarman has wrapped the third set up 6-3 to force a fourth against Ramirez Hidalgo.

5.05amGame, set and match Simon. He advances to the next round and knocks out home favourite Michael Ruseell in the process. He dug deep and found what he needed.

5.02amA late call from the line judge on a Russell lob. It's challenged and shown to be the correct call.

4.59amSimon also holds to love and is now on the brink of victory. A lot of credit has to go to the American, he is not giving up the fight.

4.56amRussell prevents the bagel by holding to love.

4.54amSimon leads 4-0 in the final set.

4.52amSomdev Devvarman trails Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo by two sets, but is a break up in the third.

4.50amThe referee has given Russell a warning because he has not got up out of his seat in time for the restart. He ties his laces 50 times, blows his nose and picks up his racquet almost in slow motion.

4.48amOn replay, simon nearly touched the net while... well, I wouldn't call it a celebration... but you get what I'm saying. He was a bit lucky.

4.48amExtraordinary tennis! Simon looked beaten, then so did Russell, before Simon eventually gets the double break.

4.46amBreak point Simon.

4.46amSimon challenges a baseline call. Hawkeye shows that, once again, there's only milimetres in it. This time it's in, though - much to the American crowd's dismay.

4.44amIt may not surprise you to hear that Cilic has won the fourth set 6-2. It seems as though Matosevic has run out of steam.

4.42amRussell pushes another forehand wide and hawkeye shows that it's only a matter of milimetres out. Game Simon.

4.41amA couple of stunning forehands from Russell there, with plenty of mustard on. 30-30 on Simon's serve.

4.38amJurgen Zopp has dumped out Denis Istomin in four sets 3-6 6-3 6-3 7-5.

4.37amSimon makes the breakthrough as Russell goes long.

4.37amTwo break points saved, one to go for Ruseell.

4.36amA souvenir for the crowd from Michael Russell. When overhead smashes go wrong. He is now at 0-40 and in grave danger of losing his serve.

4.34amCilic is blitzing the fourth set. He leads 5-1 and that also looks like it is going to the wire. Exciting first day at Flushing Meadows!

4.32amFeliciano Lopez has breezed into the next round courtesy of a 6-3 7-5 6-2 victory over Robin Haase.

4.31amAnd there it is! A shocking forehand return from Russell sees the Frenchman draw level. Fifth set!

4.30amSet point Simon.

4.29amSimon follows a tremendous backhand with an equally impressive forehand to bring it back to deuce.

4.28amAdvantage Russell.

4.28amSaved by Russell after a bit of a baseline stand off.

4.27amSet point for Simon.

4.26amA brilliant drop shot from the Frenchman checks and spins away from the advancing Russell. He can do nothing but pitch it up to Simon, who smashes home.

4.25amSimon is now serving for the fourth set.

4.24amJurgen Zopp took the third set against Denis Istomin to take a 2-1 lead. Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo leads Somdev Devvarman by two sets to love.

4.21amMarin Cilic has just broken in the fourth as he strives to come back against Marinko Matosevic. The Croat leads 2-1 on serve, but is 2-1 down in sets.

4.19amFeliciano Lopez looks on course to book his place in the next round. He leads Robin Haase by two sets, while also being two breaks up in the third. Judy Murray will be well pleased.

4.18amGilles Simon and Michael Russel have been on court nearly four hours. Simon trails 2-1 in sets, but is a break up in the fourth.

4.17amNow, to bring you up to date with proceedings at Flushing Meadows...

4.16amFederer hardly put a foot wrong tonight. He did exactly what he had to do, showing flashes of his brilliance. Young was no match for the world number one, who marches into the next round.

4.12amA big serves seals victory for the Swiss on his third match point.

4.12amAdvantage Federer.

4.12amWow! A clawed forehand from Young saves a second match point. Nicely done!

4.11amAdvantage Federer.

4.10amHis forehand is long. Deuce.

4.10amSome big hitting from Federer brings up match point.

4.09amGood scrambling from Young. He hits a backhand that finds the line and Federer can do nothing with it. 15-30 Young.

4.08amFederer is timing the ball nicely. His backhand looks in decent shape. An early warning for his rivals.

4.05amYoung holds, but Federer will now serve for the match.

4.04am30-30.

4.02amFederer holds to love and has one foot in the next round. 5-3 to the Swiss.

4.00amFederer comes into the net and is on the receiving end of two torpedo-like forehands. He couldn't get his second volley in and Young holds.

3.57amUPDATE: Feliciano Lopez has now gone two sets in front against Robin Haase.

3.56amYoung unleashed a massive forehand, but it is returned in kind by Federer, who goes 4-2 in front. Young can do nothing but offer a wry smile.

3.56amFederer sends a serve down the line to bring up 30-0. Young looks dejected as he trudges across the court, ready to receive another Federer serve.

3.54amGreat backhand from Young, who holds serve. That was a flickering of the talent that he has. His serve is quick, but there is no variation in it.

3.51amThis match looks cut and dried now as Federer holds easily, and briskly, to love.

3.50amUPDATE: Cilic has broken Matosevic to go 3-2 up on serve in the third. He's battling!

3.49amAnd a double fault to cap a terrible game from Young. 2-1 Federer, who is now on serve.

3.48amBrilliant from Federer. He hits a forehand that outfoxes Young. However, the American looks like he has already thrown the towel in. Three break points for the Fed.

3.47amGame Federer. 1-1. Third set.

3.46am30-15 Federer.

3.44amGreat defence from Young as Federer approaches the net, but can't get the half-volley over. Game Young.

3.44amYoung has dragged it back from 0-30 to 40-30.

3.43am30-30.

3.42am15-30 Federer.

3.38amFederer takes the third set point to take a two-set lead.

3.38amTwo set points for Federer. Young saves both.

3.36amUPDATE: Michael Russell has taken the third set against Gilles Simon. The advantage swung back and forth, it was a real rollercoaster ride. But it's Russell who comes through 7-5.

3.34amYoung hits it long and Federer will now serve for the second set.

3.33amBreak point Federer.

3.33amAn outrageous swerving smash from Federer, followed by a sublime forehand down the line, gets him to 30-30 on Young's serve.

3.31amFederer holds. 4-2.

3.30amThe American has also been complaining about a flickering scoreboard. Like he hasn't got enough to deal with at the other end...

3.30amThe wind is swirling on Ashe and it is proving difficult for Young. Federer is an expert in these conditions.

3.27amThe Swiss regains the initiative and leads 3-2 on serve. Young lost his concentration there having done so well to break Federer.

3.26amYoung buries into the net and gives Federer the opportunity to break right back.

3.26am30-30 with Young on serve.

3.24amFederer sends a forehand wide and Young breaks back!

3.23amFederer comes to the net and offers Young another cross-court shot. The American finds the net, though. 30-40.

3.22amYoung brings up two break points with a brilliant two-handed cross-court forehand.

3.21amUPDATE: Cilic has dropped the second set against Matosevic.

3.19amAnd after all that, Federer breaks...

3.18amBrilliant tennis all round! Firstly, Federer hits an awesome forehand down the line, which Young magnificently gets up from the volley. Federer then storms into the net, but cannot pass Young, who clips the ball into the empty court.

3.16amHis return is long. Deuce.

3.16amBreak point at 30-40 for Federer early in this second set.

3.15amTerffic inside-out forehand from Young! 15-30.

3.14amDanger for Young. 0-30.

3.13amFederer gives young a chance on his second serve, but the American does not capitalise. 1-1.

3.11amYoung challenges a call following a great backhand from Federer, but it fails. Federer brings up 30-0 with a stretching backhand volley.

3.11amGame Young.

3.10amBeautiful drop shot by Federer! The disguise on it was perfect. Young got there, but could only slam it into the net. It's 40-15 to Young, on serve.

3.08amThe Swiss maestro opens the second set with a shanked backhand.

3.05amFederer holds to love to take the first set 6-3.

3.05amA second serve from Young, and Federer runs around it before powering a forehand winner. Unbelievable, but typical, from the Swiss.

3.04amFederer sends a forehand far out of Young's reach to bring up three break points. And boy, did he make it look effortless.

3.03amChance for Federer. 0-30.

3.03amUPDATE: Cilic is struggling badly against Matosevic. He is a set and a break down.

3.02amUPDATE: Russell and Simon are still going at it in the third set. It's 4-2 to Russell.

3.01amYoung dumps it into the net and allows Federer to hold serve.

3.00amYoung has got it to deuce, courtesy of a stray forehand from Federer. He is just making one or two unforced errors. A wide serve gives him the advantage.

2.59amGreat attacking tennis from Federer, as he hits a winner with an approach to the net. 40-15.

2.57amYoung mishits a forehand to get Federer on the board at 40-15, but comes to the net to hold serve and make it 3-3.

2.56amFederer loops a forehand out and then sends a backhand beyond the baseline. 30-0.

2.54amMeanwhile, Victoria Azarenka has comfortably defeated Alexandra Panova 6-0 6-1 to safely advance into the next round.

2.54amGame Federer. Young is not able to challenge the world number one on his serve.

2.53amFederer is 40-15 up on serve.

2.51amFederer gets it to deuce, but Young brings out the big guns and forces Federer to misplace a forehand down the line. Game Young. 2-2.

2.50amFederer hits a return long and fails with a challenge. However, he comes into the net on the next point and carves a backhand volley. 40-30.

2.48amA wayward backhand from Federer gives Young the advantage on his serve. 30-15.

2.47amYoung is attacking the net at any opportunity. I can't imagine Federer will let that go unpunished. The Swiss's passing ability ranks second to none.

2.45amFederer's serve is looking imperious. That's two holds in rapid succession.

2.44amGreat play from Young as he serves out wide and comes into the net once more. He holds serve.

2.44amHe has saved both of them by coming into the net, and now has the advantage.

2.42amFederer has two break points. Dangerous for Young...

2.40amBut now, we concentrate on the man that is Roger Federer. He has held serve in the opening game against Donald Young.

2.39amIstomin leads Zopp by one set, and Klizan has taken the opener against Falla 6-4 and leads 4-0 in the second. Marin Cilic has dropped the first set 7-5 to Marinko Matosevic.

2.37amIn the men's draw, Simon and Russell are locked in an epic battle, despite it only being in the third set. It's level at 1-1, but it looks like it could go the distance on Grandstand.

2.36amAnd as I say that, Parmentier breaks...

2.35amAnastasia Pavlyuchenkova is a set up against Daniela Hantuchova. Mladenovic vs. Erakovic and Parmentier vs. Kraijcek are both level in the first set.

2.33amJi Zheng looks as though she is about to strike back against Virginie Razzano, as she leads 5-1 in the second set. She is serving to force a decider.

2.32amKirsten Flipkens took the first set 6-3 against Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, and it is currently level in the second.

2.28amROBSON WINS 6-3 7-6[6]!

2.26amMatch point Robson

2.26amIt's 6-6 in the tie break between Robson and Crawford. Nip and tuck...

2.25amMichael Russell has clinched a gruelling second set to level the match against Gilles Simon. They have been on court for one hour and 47 minutes already. It's going to be a long one, I think!

2.23amAzarenka closes it out, while Robson trails 5-4 in the tie break.

2.19amRobson holds serve to take the second to a tie break.

2.18amAfter just 15 minutes on court, Azarenka will serve for the first set at 5-0. Whirlwind doesn't begin to describe it.

2.15amRobson is serving to stay in the second set at 5-6.

2.13amRoger Federer is up next against Donald Young, and we will be focusing on that match.

2.12amIt was a similar story in the second set for Duval. Not enough first serves, six double faults and 18 unforced errors.

2.10amClijsters is safely through, without really breaking sweat.

2.10amROBSON UPDATE: 5-5 in the second set, Crawford on serve.

2.09amIt looks as though Clijsters is about to close out her match against the teenager Victoria Duval on Ashe.

2.08amThere is no repeat of her sluggish start to the French Open for Azarenka here. Panova is offering little resistence in these early stages. The Belarusian leads 2-0.

2.05am... and she only needs one, as she races in to dispatch a volley expertly. 'The Shriek' is in full flow.

1.52amRobson has broken back against Crawford, and Michael Russell has broken Gilles Simon. Contrasting fortunes for America.

1.51amDuval's first serve was 65% in the first set. She is only young, but she will learn very quickly that that is not good enough. Especially against players like Clijsters.

1.49amAnastasia Rodionova has overcome Julia Cohen in straight sets to book her place in the second round.

1.47amLaura Robson is finally on the board in the second set, but she still trails 3-1 to Crawford.

1.46amAnd a terrific backhand from the baseline seals the first set for Clijsters.

1.45amSet point for Clijsters...

1.44amClijsters is hitting the ball sweetly and is dragging her 17-year-old opponent all over the court. Brilliant stuff from the Belgian.

1.17amBut before we leave Armstrong, let me tell you that Fish has broken Soeda's serve and leads 2-0 in the third set.

1.16amApologies - it is level between Simon and Russell. Simon is on serve. We will switch focus to that match, all the while keeping you posted with the latest from Robson's match against Crawford.

1.03amQuickly! Back to Fish! He looks on course for a two-set lead. It's 5-2 to the American in the tie break.

1.02amMathieu has come through a tough opponent in Andreev, and he did it the hard way by fighting back from two sets down.

1.00amGame, set and match Mathieu. He wins 2-6 4-6 7-6 7-6 6-1.

12.58amThe second set between Fish and Soeda has gone to a tie-break.

12.58amA big backhand down the line sees Mathieu break! He serves for the match...

12.57amMathieu has dragged it back to deuce from 0-40 down. He has broken the Russian, who led by two sets. Mathieu has won both of his sets on tie break.

12.56amAndreev is coasting through this service game. It looks as though Mathieu would just like to serve this one out.

12.55amWickmayer eventually took the first set against Glushko by breaking in the final game for a 7-5 triumph. Simon has broken back against Russell, while it is still on serve in Laura Robson's match.

12.52amLet me switch the main attention to Mathieu's match against Andreev. The Frenchman leads 4-1 in the fifth set. Andreev is on serve. Game on!

12.34amSoeda has very quickly relinquished his serve and fish now leads 4-2.

12.30amMathieu has taken the fourth set against Andreev. It's going to the wire on court 13.

12.29amA great return of serve from Soeda and we're back on serve in the second set!

12.28amSo that brings you pretty much up to date with all you need to know from New York. Meanwhile, Mardy Fish is struggling with his serve. Soeda has just missed a gimme at the net to break back. We're at deuce.

12.14amLet me round up some of the action and results for you - very quickly, mind...

12.12amA long rally results in Soeda dumping it into the net. An early break of serve for Fish!

12.11amFish has a break point at 40-30 early in the second set...

12.10amThe rain delay has played havoc with the schedule at Flushing Meadows. Pfft... only at the US Open, right?!

12.09amFish took the first set against Soeda on a tie break 7-3. It was tough work for the American, however...

12.07amGood evening Sports Mole readers. I'm sure that you will join me in thanking Messrs Power and Apicella for their sterling work throughout the day session.

12.04amRight its time for me to bid you goodnight. Tennis insomniacs be sure to stick with Michael Penkman as he guides you through an exciting night of action including Federer, Clijsters and our very own Laura Robson.

12.00amSoeda is proving a tough nut to crack for the experienced American, Fish narrowly edging it 4-2 at the change of ends.

11.55pmFish quickly produced a perfect service game and its tie-break time in the first set.

11.53pmMardy Fish's is now serving to stay alive in the first set on Louis Armstrong, Soeda mounting a comeback to lead 6-5.

11.52pmOver on the Grandstand Court women's fifth seed Petra Kvitova is being pushed all the way by Polona Hercog. The Slovenian forced the first set into a tie-break, which Kvitova claimed narrowly 8-6.

11.50pmElsewhere Russian veteran Nikolay Davidenko booked his place in the second round with a win over Guido Pella in four sets.

11.48pmUS interest is currently focused on the Louis Armstrong Stadium, with Mardy Fish up against Japan's Go Soeda. The 30-year-old currently leads by five games to four in the first set.

11.46pmThere is British interest later on Court 4 as Laura Robson takes on American qualifier Samantha Crawford, with the winner set to face Clijsters in round two.

11.45pmFederer also goes up against US opposition as he takes on the talented but inconsistent Donald Young.

11.44pmClijsters has promised that the US Open will be her last tournament and has pledged to retire on its conclusion. Emotions will run high as she faces American Victoria Duval.

11.42pmThere's still plenty of top tennis to come as the US Open enters its late session. A couple of big hitters kick-off their campaigns tonight as Kim Clijsters and Roger Federer get going at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

11.40pmMelinda Czink showed flashes of ability but couldn't handle the raw power of Sharapova's game, her straight sets defeat was in truth entirely justified.

11.36pmIn truth Sharapova couldn't have asked for a better start to her US Open. A number of long rallies to blow away the cobwebs and a confident, measured performance. The Russian is definitely a contender in the women's tournament.

11.34pmA smart shot to the baseline keeps Czink alive, but its only a momentary reprieve. Sharapova takes the match with the very next point to win 6-2 6-2.

11.33pmCzink goes for broke but misses a forehand winner. Two match points for Sharapova.

11.29pmThe Russian crashes home another big return to take the game and make it 5-2 in the second. Sharapova will now serve for the match.

11.28pmThat rally forced Sharapova to up her game and she earns break point with a lovely slice disguised into the corner. No chance for Czink there, which has been the case for much of the match.

11.26pmCzink digs deep and wins the best rally of the match. A wonderful rally of more than twenty shots forces Sharapova wide and Czink finishes in style to rapturous applause.

11.24pmSharapova shows her class to find a way to hold and she restores a two-game lead in the second set.
