Thanasi Kokkinakis has berated his 'disastrous' retirement from his first-round US Open clash with Richard Gasquet on Tuesday.
Leading 2-1 in sets, the Australian, 19, began to suffer from severe cramps before eventually calling it quits at 2-0 down in the decider.
"One-all, 30-love in the fourth set, I was bouncing the ball. Then, immediately I started to feel my forearm go. I'm like, 'Oh no, this is bad'," he is quoted as saying by FOX Sports.
"I didn't feel tired physically either, which is the most frustrating thing about it. I actually felt alright.
"My energy levels were good and then I went up to hit a swing and volley or something and both my calves - it was just disaster."
Kokkinakis became the 10th player in the men's singles to withdraw midway through a match, with two also retiring in the women's draw for an all-time Grand Slam record of 12 casualties.
