Tomas Berdych has made it through to the third round of the US Open following a 6-3 4-6 6-2 3-6 6-3 win over Martin Klizan.
It took the sixth seed three hours and 45 minutes to beat the 65th-ranked Klizan, who had previously gone through five sets in his opening match of the tournament against Steve Darcis.
Berdych eased through the first set without losing a game, but in the second he lost his serve for the first time at 6-5 to allow Klizan to level the scores.
The Czech broke his opponent twice on his way to winning the third set, before losing his service game at 4-3 down in the fourth as Klizan took the match into a fifth set.
However, it was Berdych who would come out on top, after breaking Klizan early on to establish a 3-1 lead which allowed him to serve out the match and set up a third-round clash against Teymuraz Gabashvili.
