Denver Broncos kicker Matt Prater hits the longest field goal in NFL history, converting from 64 yards during yesterday's win over the Tennessee Titans.

Denver Broncos kicker Matt Prater broke the NFL record for the longest field goal in history during yesterday's 51-28 win over the Tennessee Titans.

Prater kicked the goal from 64 yards out just before half time, sparking wild celebrations from the Broncos players despite the fact that they were still trailing 21-20 at the time.

The previous record had stood since 1970 when Tom Dempsey kicked a goal from 63 yards, a mark equalled by Jason Elam (1998), Sebastian Janikowski (2011) and David Akers (2012).

"Such an awesome moment, I'm glad it came in a win. It was crazy, it was awesome because almost the whole team rushed the field after that kick. It definitely was a momentum swing," Prater told reporters.

"It was little tough [on Sunday], especially the first couple kicks, but by that time my foot was numb anyway. I felt like I hit it pretty good, but I didn't know, but I honestly thought it was going to be real close, but they put the return guy back there and I saw him backing up and thought I was going to have to cover this.

"I was just trying to blast it and I thought I hit it pretty well."

Despite his record-breaking feat, the 29-year-old revealed that the distance was nothing new to him and insisted that he was capable of even bigger kicks.

"I've hit them in the 70s in practice," he added.

The victory ensured that the Broncos remain top of the AFC West with an 11-2 record, one win above the Kansas City Chiefs.
