Wes Welker: 'Mind games were common at New England Patriots'

Wes Welker admits that he doesn't know if the Patriots had a copy of the New York Jets' playbook but feels that mind games were always common between the sides.

Wes Welker has insisted that mind games were common in his days at the New England Patriots and is unsure whether his former club had possession of the New York Jets' playbook.

Former Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine claimed that the Patriots may have received a copy and used it to their benefit.

However, Welker is adamant that talk was common between the sides after Tom Brady reportedly boasted to former Jets linebackers coach Mike Smith that Bill Belichick's side had the playbook.

Welker told WBZ-FM: "Not that I know of. Every little bit helps, but at the same time I don't know. It might.

"Not that I know of. My best friend from college was on the staff there with the Jets, Mike Smith, and we would always make stuff up with each other. Tom got to know Mike as well.

"Mike would say, 'Oh so-and-so is gonna cover you in the game -- actually no we're just gonna double team you.' And I would make stuff up, too. Every once in a while you throw something true in there just to throw him off. It was just playing mind games a little bit."

The Patriots were involved in controversy in 2007 when they were docked their first-round Draft pick for video-taping their opponents' defensive signals.
