Dr James Andrews believes that Robert Griffin III can be ready for the 2013 NFL season after undergoing knee surgery.

The surgeon that carried out knee ligament surgery on Robert Griffin III earlier this week has said that the Washington Redskins quarterback is hoping to be fit in time for the 2013 season.

The rookie needed his lateral collateral ligament repaired and a previous repair to his anterior cruciate ligament reworked after injuring his knee in the Redskins' 24-14 loss to the Seattle Seahawks last weekend.

Dr James Andrews said in a statement: "Robert Griffin III had successful knee surgery [on Wednesday]. He had a direct repair of his LCL and a re-do of his previous ACL reconstruction.

"We expect a full recovery and it is everybody's hope and belief that due to Robert's high motivation, he will be ready for the 2013 season.

"The goal of his treatment is to give him the best opportunity for a long professional career."

Reports have suggested that RG3 will need six to eight months to recover from the surgery.
