Great Britain's Ben Pattison secures a surprise bronze medal in the men's 800m at the World Athletics Championships.

Ben Pattison has surged to a surprise bronze medal for Great Britain in the men's 800m at the World Athletics Championships.

The 21-year-old, running at his first Worlds and having finished in sixth at last year's European Championships, was drawn on the inside lane, minimalising his options for strategy.

However, despite setting the early pace before dropping back to fifth, Pattison found a second wind to move back into the medal positions and hold off the chasing pack.

Pattison's third place came in a time of 1:44.83, just 0.59 seconds adrift of Canada's Marco Arop who took the gold ahead of Kenya's Emmanuel Wanyonyi.

Meanwhile, Great Britain's women delivered in the 4x100m relay, the quartet of Asha Philip, Imani-Lara Lansiquot, Bianca Williams and Daryll Neita powering home to bronze behind the USA, who ran a Championship record of 41.03 seconds, and Jamaica.

While the British team were never in contention for gold or silver, Neita held off the challenge of Italy down the final stretch.

There was disappointment for the men's team, though, as they agonisingly missed out on third place by just 0.04 seconds despite producing a near-faultless run.

USA claimed gold - Noah Lyles winning his third of the event - with Italy and Jamaica in second and third place respectively. body check tags ::
