Triple jumper Phillips Idowu has targeted Olympic gold in London next year after claiming a silver medal at the World Athletics Championships earlier today.
The Great British athlete jumped a season's best 17.70m in the third round to take the lead with just two rounds remaining.
However, American Christian Taylor responded with a leap of 17.96m to claim first prize ahead of Idowu.
"It wasn't my day," said the 2009 world champion. "I felt I had that distance in my legs but it never came.
"I jumped two seasons' best. It wasn't enough but hopefully I can do it next year [at the London 2012 Olympics] and get gold.
Phillips was competing to become the first Briton to retain a world title after Jessica Ennis failed to achieve the feat earlier in the competition.
