Italy's Clemente Russo has claimed the final semi-final spot in the heavyweight divison with a two-point win over Cuba's Jose Larduet.

Larduet started well and was producing the cleaner work in the opening round, but the scores remained after three minutes.

The Cuban continued to press his opponent, whose guard was very low and inviting the pressure.

The action became stilted as Russo threw single scoring shots before clinching Larduet when he tried to counter.

Neither man was very accurate, but the Italian managed to land more shots to take a 9-7 lead.

The Italian continued to frustrate Larduet, and the crowd, by holding onto him.

Larduet was trying to shake him off, but was receiving no help from the referee, who failed to separate them on every occasion.

Russo's negative tactics worked well for him as he clinched a 12-10 victory.
