Australia make steady progress courtesy of a half century from captain Michael Clarke, who took the tourists to 180-3.

Australia currently sit on 180-3 at tea on the first day of the third Ashes Test following an assured innings at the crease from captain Michael Clarke, despite England dismissing Chris Rogers on 84.

Australia continued to rack up the runs after lunch, with Rogers looking comfortable on his way towards a century, but it was not to be as he fell for an lbw from a full delivery from Graeme Swann.

After Clarke convinced his batting partner not to review, the captain was joined by Steve Smith, who was almost out for a duck when a rejected lbw appeal from Swann forced England captain Alastair Cook into using a review.

It was an unsuccessful appeal from the hosts as replays showed that the ball, which hit Smith's pad, would have just clipped leg stump.

Despite some commanding bowling from Swann and Tim Bresnan, Clarke was able to remain in control and reach a half century, totting up his nation's scoreline.

England were convinced that they had nabbed their fourth wicket when Smith appeared to have been caught behind after driving at a full delivery from James Anderson, but following a review, the third umpire declared not out due to a lack of edge on Hotspot.

Smith currently sits on 20 runs.
