Australia end day one of the inaugural day-night Test match with New Zealand with a lead of 148 runs after bowling their opponents out for 202 in Adelaide.

Two late wickets for New Zealand have left their day-night Test match against Australia in the balance after the opening three sessions in Adelaide.

Australia inflicted the first blow by removing Martin Guptill for one, but the Black Caps responded well as Tom Latham hit a half-century to take his team to 94-3.

However, that quickly became 98-5, with Brendon McCullum making just four, and New Zealand lost wickets at regular intervals for the remainder of their innings before eventually being bowled out for 202, with Mitchell Santner (31) the only batsman other than Latham to score more than 30.

As for Australia's bowlers, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazelwood both took three wickets apiece, with Peter Siddle and Nathan Lyon chipping in with two each.

Under the lights, Australia would have been hoping to reach the close with all 10 wickets intact, but David Warner went for just one, before Joe Burns followed soon after for 14.

The home side eventually reached the close on 54-2, 148 runs adrift of New Zealand, with Steven Smith (24) and Adam Voges (9) the two men currently unbeaten at the crease.
