England trail by 460 runs at the close of play on day two of the fifth and final Ashes test.
After play finally got underway at 2.30pm, Australia continued where they left off, adding 185 to their overnight score.
They declared on 492-9, with Steve Smith finishing unbeaten on 138 as he made his maiden Test century.
With the likes of Brad Haddin and James Faulkner dismissed quite routinely, Smith frustrated the England attack all day, much like Shane Watson the day before.
England took the offer of bad light at the first opportunity, having started their fight-back in determined fashion. Alastair Cook finished on 17, while Joe Root made his way to 13 as England closed the day on 32-0.
England's batsmen will have to match their Australian counterparts in double time if they are to turn this match around and win The Ashes outright.
