Joe Root's century helps England to fight back on day two of the second Test match against New Zealand at Headingley.

Late wickets have halted England's progress on day two of the second Test against New Zealand at Headingley.

The hosts finished the day on 336-7 after Trent Boult struck three times to curtail the hosts' recovery, which had been led by Joe Root.

The 22-year-old came to the crease with his team three wickets down in the morning session, but went on to score his his maiden Test ton, becoming the first Yorkshireman to achieve that feat on his home ground.

However, Root's innings - ably assisted by Yorkshire teammate Jonny Bairstow - was brought to an end on 104 after Boult found the edge of his bat and Brendan McCullum took the catch.

Bairstow (64) also put in an important innings, reaching his half century before following Root into the pavilion in similar fashion, with McCullum swallowing the ball in his gloves after Boult found the edge.

Stuart Broad was dismissed for a duck as the Boult and McCullum combination continued to trouble the hosts late in the day.
