England lose their opening Twenty20 World Cup Super Eights match by 15 runs to the West Indies in Pallekele.

England have lost their opening Twenty20 World Cup Super Eights match by 15 runs to the West Indies.

The holders reached a score of 164-4 after the Windies had fired their way to 179-5 in Pallekele.

Johnson Charles top-scored for the West Indies with 84 before he went off the bowling of Jade Dernbach.

Chris Gayle was also in typically ferocious mood at the crease and whacked 58 runs off 35 balls.

However, he was eventually dismissed by Graeme Swann as England were set a target of 180.

Their innings started disastrously as Craig Kieswetter and Luke Wright were both bowled for ducks by Ravi Rampaul in the first over to leave their side on 0-2.

Jonny Bairstow's sluggish time at the crease came to an end when he was caught spectacularly on the boundary by Kieron Pollard from a Gayle delivery.

Alex Hales and Eoin Morgan took it upon themselves to put England in contention and they soon reached their hundred partnership off 52 balls.

Morgan ended on 71 not out, but Denesh Ramdin and Marlon Samuels combined to see off Hales for 68 as England fell 15 runs short.
