Mike Atherton: Mohammad Amir sentence is unfair

:Headline: Mike Atherton: Mohammad Amir sentence is unfair: ID:7270: from db_amp
Mike Atherton claims that Mohammad Amir will learn very little from his six-month custodial sentence at Feltham Young Offenders' Institution.

Former England captain Mike Atherton believes that Mohammad Amir will gain very little from his six-month jail term for spot-fixing.

The Pakistan fast bowler was given a custodial sentence and sent to Feltham Young Offenders' Institution for his part in fixing elements of the 2010 Lord's Test match with England.

The 19-year-old is already serving a 5-year ban from cricket and Atherton believes the suspension should have been enough.

"I don't see how by sending Amir to Feltham Young Offenders' Institution, which is a pretty grim place, he'll gain anything from that," Atherton told Sky Sports.

"The judge has been scrupulously fair throughout a complex case. You can argue he did the right thing by separating the sentences as he figured that Salman Butt had greater culpability.

"[Amir] messed up, as he himself has admitted but there were many mitigating circumstances that put his case slightly different to [Butt and Asif]. His background, his youth and, as the judge said, the fact the captain pushed him into corruption, which is why I don't think a custodial sentence was fair."

Amir's former teammates Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif were handed 30-month and 12-month jail terms respectively.
