Anna Meares has revealed her admiration for Scotland's record-breaking cycling star Sir Chris Hoy after she became Australia's most successful female track cyclist at the Commonwealth Games, securing gold on the first day of the competition.
Meares's gold in this morning's 500m individual time trial was the fifth of her career, and came after Hoy offered her some unusual advice.
"Chris texted me earlier and said 'be sure to wipe your feet before you come into my nice clean velodrome'. He's a cheeky one," Meares told reporters.
"He was up there watching and he's someone that I aspire to and that I like. He's an incredible athlete, an incredible down-to-earth person and it's wonderful to be able to [win gold here]."
Meares, 30, claimed victory less than 24 hours after she carried Australia's flag in the opening ceremony.
