English diver Jack Laugher says that he can improve his impressive 1m springboard total from the qualifiers in tonight's Commonwealth Games final.

England's Jack Laugher has expressed his satisfaction after a convincing performance in the Commonwealth Games 1m springboard preliminaries this morning.

Laugher's score of 435.30 was more than 50 points better than the next best - Australia's Matthew Mitcham - with England teammate Chris Mears less than half a point back in third.

"I scored 435 which is only 10 points off my [personal best], so a decent performance in the morning with some new, harder dives in there," Laugher told Sports Mole.

"I'm looking to better that score in the final. There was some slight mistakes, but for me is a good all-around performance and I'm really happy."

Best friends Laugher and Mears compete in the 3m synchronised event together and Laugher, 19, said that it was nice to also compete against him individually.

"It's such a friendly rivalry we've got," he added. "We've had friendly competition for four-five years now and we congratulate each other after every single dive no matter how it went.

"Sharing a hotel room with him and living with him, it is cool. It's really nice and to be competing against him here is a brilliant feeling."

After such a convincing margin in the qualifiers, Laugher will be favourite for gold, but he isn't fussed if it goes awry tonight.

"1m isn't my focus, it's 3m and 3m synchro here," he said. "I'm good at 1m, I won the National Championships back in January, so I'm looking to be able to put out a good performance.

"Winning the prelim, I do feel like I'm in good stead and I do feel that I'm very confident, but anything can in a competition. If I don't win, if I don't get on the podium it's fine. I've got my main events coming up."

Laugher's other individual event, the 3m springboard, takes place tomorrow before he and Mears go for gold in the 3m synchro on Friday.
