Diver Jack Laugher expresses his "ridiculous" happiness after winning Commonwealth Games gold for England in the men's 1m springboard.

Jack Laugher has expressed his delight after landing England's first diving gold medal of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The 19-year-old was a clear winner in the men's 1m springboard, finishing more than 45 points clear of Matthew Mitcham, who just edged past teammate Grant Nel for the silver medal. Laugher's fellow Englishman and best friend Chris Mears was fourth.

"It's a really really good start [to the Games]. To come away winning the prelims 10 points under my [personal best] and then to come away in the final with a gold medal four points over my PB is just a fantastic feeling," he told reporters at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh this evening.

Laugher thinks that his best event is the 3m springboard, but believes that the 1m is a useful skill to have in his locker.

"I train 1m at home quite often and I was 1m national champion back in January in Southend," he added. "It's a hard event definitely but it isn't my main event.

"I've got my 3m tomorrow and the 3m synchro with Chris. It's amazing to come away with a gold medal, I'm ridiculously happy."

Alicia Blagg and Rebecca Gallantree have just won England's second diving gold medal of the day in the women's synchronised 3m platform.
