Diego Maradona has offered Antonio Cassano his full support after learning that the Italian striker requires heart surgery.
AC Milan confirmed earlier today that the 29-year-old must undergo an operation after tests showed that he had suffered cerebal trauma.
In an open letter, published by Il Corriere dello Sport, Argentine Maradona said: "These are very difficult moments where Cassano must be strong, think about himself, his family and children. I am thinking of you a lot in these days and I was struck by what has happened.
"However, I know that from the time I met you in Rome that you have a strong and positive character. The affections of those who love you will help you overcome this.
"I hope football can see your return soon because the fantasy of players like you in football is never enough."
The length of Cassano's absence from the game has yet to be announced.
