Ten-man AC Milan have slipped nine points behind Serie A leaders Napoli due to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Roma in Sunday's Serie A clash at San Siro.
Neither side was able to break the deadlock in a fairly tame first half, though Hakan Calhanoglu and Franck Kessie came close for the hosts.
The visitors, meanwhile, mustered a number of half-chances through Alessandro Florenzi, Kevin Strootman and Lorenzo Pellegrini, who came on as a sub for the injured Strootman.
Roma went on to take the lead in the 72nd minute through Edin Dzeko, whose long-range effort took a heavy deflection off Alessio Romagnoli to wrongfoot Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The Giallorossi then doubled their advantage just five minutes later thanks to Florenzi's close-range tap-in after the Milan goalkeeper kept out Radja Nainggolan's ferocious effort.
Milan ended up finishing the game a man down after Calhanoglu was shown a second yellow card for clattering into Nainggolan in the centre of the park.
