Arsenal are reportedly ramping up their efforts to sign Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams, with the Gunners contacting the player's brother over a possible move.

Arsenal have reportedly made contact with the brother of Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams ahead of a potential January switch.

The 22-year-old is seemingly set for a move away from the Spanish club in 2025, although the player's wage demands are said to be an issue for the Gunners.

Williams burst onto the European stage at Euro 2024 in Germany last summer, playing an integral part as Spain secured their fourth continental crown.

The goal involvements have dried up somewhat for the youngster since that success in Berlin, though, with the winger netting just once across 17 La Liga matches this term.

Williams enjoyed his best-ever campaign at club level during the 2023-24 term, in which he scored eight times and provided a staggering 16 assists.

Arsenal 'make contact' with brother of target Williams

According to Spanish outlet El Nacional, Arsenal have taken the next step in their pursuit of Athletic Bilbao hero Williams during the winter window.

The report claims that the Gunners have made contact with the brother of Nico, Inaki Williams, over a swoop for his sibling before the February 3 deadline.

It is understood that Arsenal are the current frontrunners in the race for Williams, who is also wanted by Spanish and European heavyweights Barcelona.

Mikel Arteta's men allegedly have the advantage at this stage in the race for the winger, who is supposedly yet to make a decision on his preferred destination.

While there are concerns surrounding Williams's financial demands, Arsenal are reportedly prepared to alter their wage structure in order to lure the attacker to the Emirates.

Arteta's big decision

After a sobering FA Cup third-round defeat to rivals Manchester United on Sunday afternoon, there are some important decisions for Arsenal to make during the transfer window.

The Gunners missed a host of clear-cut chances in the loss to the Red Devils, with the North Londoners' need for attacking reinforcements apparent.

Arteta's situation has not been helped by the injury of star man Bukayo Saka, who is currently out of action due to a hamstring issue sustained during the festive period.

The Spaniard must now decide whether Arsenal target a central striker before the conclusion of trading, or instead push on with a move for winger Williams. body check tags ::
