Aston Villa claim bragging rights in the Second City derby and rise up to second in the Championship table with Sunday's 2-0 win over Birmingham City.

Aston Villa have risen to second in the Championship table thanks to a 2-0 derby win over Birmingham City on Sunday afternoon.

The hosts began brightly as Jack Grealish pounced on a poor David Stockdale kick just four minutes in to have a shot on goal which was deflected wide for a corner.

Scott Hogan then rattled the Birmingham crossbar on 18 minutes and came close again eight minutes later after being played in by Albert Adomah, though Roberts got in the way of the latter effort.

The first half finished goalless but Birmingham came within a whisker of opening the scoring three minutes before the break.

John Terry's slip allowed a ball played down the channel by Jacques Maghoma to reach Sam Gallagher, who went on to strike an effort against the post before blazing the rebound over.

Birmingham would come to rue the miss because, on the hour mark, Grealish played a pass into the path of Adomah, who shifted the ball onto his right foot and rifled home from 18 yards.

Villa went on to seal the win nine minutes from time when Conor Hourihane pounced on a poor clearance to slam a ferocious strike up over Stockdale and into the net from 20 yards.

The Blues went on to end the game with 10 men after Cheikh Ndoye was shown his second yellow card after an altercation with Terry in the Villa box.
