Atletico Madrid assistant boss Muno Burgos has claimed that his side's place is "with Sevilla and Valencia" and not with Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Burgos has also said that past glories count for nothing as the capital outfit attempt to match last season's exploits, where the club won their first La Liga title since 1996.
"We are proud to have competed against these monsters (Barcelona and Real Madrid), but this is not our place. Our place is with Sevilla and Valencia," he told El Partido de las 12.
"I think people, in general, were happy that Atletico won La Liga. What we achieved has already been forgotten, it's over now.
"We continue with the hunger to win, with his anxiety to win. We work as if Atletico never won anything. We're only concerned about what happens today. Competing is essential, but the first competition is within the team."
Burgos has taken on a more senior role in the early stages of this season due to a touchline suspension for head coach Diego Simeone.
