Atletico Madrid started the 2015-16 La Liga season with a 1-0 victory over Las Palmas on Saturday evening.

The only goal of the match came in the 16th minute, with Antoine Griezmann's deflected set piece finding the back of the net.

Las Palmas had some bright moments in the second period, but could not make the breakthrough on their return to Spain's top flight.

Here, Sports Mole takes a closer look at how each player performed in Madrid.

ATLETICO

Goal

Jan Oblak: Made an outstanding save to deny Aythami Artiles late on as the stopper started the new campaign with a clean sheet. Also impressed with his presence and distribution. (7/10)

Defence

Juanfran: Was his usual self on the right as he caused problems in the final third and helped restrict Las Palmas to few chances. Still one of the finest right-backs in European football. (7/10)

Diego Godin: New season, but some things never change. The experienced centre-back was a tower of strength at the heart of the defence as he marshalled the back four once again. (7/10)

Jose Gimenez: Miranda's departure means that the Uruguay international is now considered first choice alongside Godin. Did not put a foot wrong as he further enhanced his growing reputation. (7/10)

Filipe Luis: Looked delighted to be back at the Vicente Calderon. Caused a whole host of problems on the left as he delivered a number of telling crosses into the Las Palmas box. (7/10)

Midfield

Koke: Dictated Atletico's play from a deep position and always looked in control of developments in Madrid. Also hit the post with a super free kick in the latter stages. (7/10)

Gabi: Neat and tidy in possession of the ball, but the captain's passing was a little negative in the second period. Has a fight on his hands to keep his spot this season. (6/10)

Tiago: The legs might not move as quick as they once did, but the midfielder's brain is still in full working order. Nothing spectacular, but kept things ticking over in a central area. (6/10)

Attack

Oliver Torres: Looks set to play a key role for Atletico this season after returning from a loan spell at Porto. Showed bits and pieces in the final third and looked confident in possession. (6/10)

Jackson Martinez: Needs time to adapt to life at Atletico, but showed promising signs. Used his pace and power to unnerve Las Palmas and had a couple of half-chances. (6/10)

Antoine Griezmann: Proved the match-winner at the Vicente Calderon as his free kick found the back of the net in the first period. Always looked capable of making something happen. (7/10)

Substitutes

Fernando Torres: Replaced Martinez just before the hour and looked dangerous in the final third. Picked up a yellow card late on, however, for simulation inside the penalty area. (6/10)

Angel Correa: Big things are expected of the Argentine this season and it is not difficult to see why that is the case. Looked a box of tricks and caused a whole host of problems late on. (7/10)

Raul Garcia: Helped calm those around him in the final 10 minutes. (6/10)

LAS PALMAS

Goal

Raul Lizoain: Actually made a couple of smart saves in Madrid, but should have done better with what proved to be the only goal of the match. Griezmann's effort might well have been kept out. (6/10)

Defence

David Simon: Impressed in the right wing-back role for the visitors. Hit the post with a header in the second period and was more than prepared to break into the final third. (7/10)

Pedro Bigas: Also came close in the second period when he rose from a corner. Can he pleased with his defensive display on what was his debut for the newly-promoted side. (7/10)

Antolin Alcaraz: Made an excellent block to deny Correa late on and looked strong at the heart of the defence. Was a key contributor to what was an impressive defensive performance. (7/10)

Aythami Artiles: Skipper will feel that he should have scored late on, but his first effort brought a fine save from Oblak, before he headed over the crossbar. Another that had a solid game. (7/10)

Dani Castellano: Was not as forward-thinking as Simon on the opposite side, but still gave a decent performance in the wing-back position. Started alongside his twin brother Javi. (6/10)

Midfield

Jonathan Viera: Big things are expected of the winger this season, but he struggled to get into the game at the Calderon. Work-rate not a problem, just did not see enough of the ball. (6/10)

Javi Castellano: Was neat and tidy in possession of the ball, but struggled to thread that final pass. Can be pleased with his energetic performance in the middle of the park. (7/10)

Hernan: Picked up an injury in the first period and never seemed to fully recover. Was the first Las Palmas player to leave the field in the second period. (6/10)

Roque Mesa: Did his best to make something happen in a wide area, but the midfielder largely struggled to make his mark and was also subbed just past the hour. (6/10)

Attack

Sergio Araujo: Scored 25 goals for Las Palmas last season and looked capable of causing problems at this level. A real bright spark in the final third during what was a very encouraging performance. (7/10)

Substitutes

Vicente Gomez: Replaced Hernan in the 63rd minute and did well to pick up the pace of the match. Was guilty of conceding a couple of poor free kicks late on though. (6/10)

Momo: Experienced midfielder has previously played in La Liga, but he struggled to make his mark in the final 25 minutes of action. (6/10)

Willian Jose: Neat and tidy after replacing Dani Castellano in the 80th minute. Currently on loan with the Spanish side from Deportivo Maldonado. (6/10)
