Portugal finally broke the deadlock after just over an hour of play, Bruno Alves heading the ball in from a Moutinho cross.
Hugo Almeida doubled their advantage with a little over 10 minutes before full time, heading the ball in from close range.
The result leaves Portugal just one point behind Russia.
