Champions League final 2020: Bayern Munich's history in the European Cup/Champions League

Ahead of the 2020 Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at Bayern's rich history in the competition.

Bayern Munich will be looking to pen a new chapter in their rich European Cup/Champions League history when they take on Paris Saint-Germain in the 2019-20 final in Lisbon on Sunday.

The Bavarian giants are one of the true heavyweights of the European game and by far Germany's most successful representatives on the continental stage.

Sunday's match will be their 11th time in the final of the biggest club competition in world football, whereas opponents Paris Saint-Germain will be gracing that particular stage for the very first time.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at Bayern's storied history in the European Cup/Champions League.

Bayern's record in this competition is largely a tale of success, but there have also been some major disappointments with five wins and five defeats from their 10 previous finals.

Even so, making it as far as the final would be regarded as a major triumph for most clubs and only 13-time winners and 16-time finalists Real Madrid have made it to the showpiece event more often than Bayern.

AC Milan and Liverpool are the only other clubs to have lifted the trophy more often than Bayern's haul of five, although that does also mean that only Juventus have lost the final on more occasions too.

However, in many other measures it is only Madrid who can top them; Los Blancos are the only team to have played more games, won more games and scored more goals in the European Cup and Champions League, with the Germans winning 205 of their 351 outings in the competition and netting 723 times in the process.

It is worth noting that Real Madrid have had 14 more years in the competition too, with Bayern first appearing in 1969-70 when Madrid were already six-time winners.

Bayern were dumped out in the first round on that occasion and then lost to eventual winners Ajax in their next European Cup campaign in 1972-73, but one year later they dethroned the Dutch outfit as kings of Europe.

A team including legendary figures such as Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Muller and Sepp Maier beat Atletico Madrid in the 1974 final, beginning a run of three titles in a row - against Leeds United in 1975 and Saint-Etienne in 1976.

Bayern were back in the final again six years later but tasted defeat on that stage for the first time when Aston Villa won 1-0, and five years after that they lost by one goal again, this time at the hands of Porto.

The most difficult defeat to take was surely the infamous 1999 Champions League final, though, when Bayern led Manchester United for 84 minutes and seemed destined to win the trophy until two stoppage time goals saw Alex Ferguson's side produce one of the most dramatic comebacks the competition has ever seen.

A semi-final defeat to Real Madrid the following year did not help things, although they got revenge 12 months later with victory over the same opponents at the same stage to reach a final which they won against Valencia to end a run of three straight final losses.

Bayern had to wait another nine years before reaching the big time again, and on that occasion they were beaten by Jose Mourinho's treble-winning Inter Milan class of 2010.

Everything seemed custom-made for them to lift the trophy for a fifth time two years later when the final was held in their own stadium and Chelsea were their opponents, but Didier Drogba's heroics saw Bayern fall to another gut-wrenching final defeat at the hands of English opposition.

This time they only had to wait one more year for redemption, though, reaching a third final in the space of four years in 2013 and overcoming domestic rivals Borussia Dortmund to finally get their name etched on the trophy for a fifth time, joining an exclusive club in the process.

The following five years saw Bayern's journey end at the hands of Spanish opposition - including four semi-final defeats - before losing to eventual winners Liverpool in the round of 16 last season.
