Bayern Munich booked their place in the last eight of the Champions League in emphatic style by thrashing Shakhtar Donetsk 7-0 at the Allianz Arena this evening.

Olexandr Kucher was sent off for gifting a penalty to the hosts in just the third minute, and Shakhtar never recovered as Thomas Muller scored from 12 yards before Jerome Boateng doubled the lead later in the first half.

Second-half goals from Franck Ribery, Muller, Holger Badstuber, Robert Lewandowski and Mario Gotze secured the most comfortable of wins following a goalless draw between the sides in the first leg.

Was the result fair?

There's no arguing with a 7-0 scoreline. Bayern were dominant from the first whistle, and although the decision to send off Kucher in the third minute had a big impact, the visitors simply did not respond well enough to the early setback. Bayern will face much sterner tests in this competition, but their dominance was unquestionable at the Allianz Arena. The hosts attacked, Shakhtar attempted to defend, and there was just no stopping Pep Guardiola's side.

Bayern's performance

Looking back on their performances over the season, this might not even rank in the top five. It's a surprising statement considering the scoreline, but Bayern just didn't need to be at their best. However, there is no taking away from the efficiency of Bayern's attack. Muller, Lewandowski, Gotze and Ribery were all constant threats to the Shakhtar defence, and the midfielders capitalised on the numerical advantage.

Guardiola appeared concerned by the fluency of his side's play in the first half, but their persistence was too much for Shakhtar to handle and a patient passing game was all that was needed to break down the back four. Bastian Schweinsteiger and Sebastian Rode deserve special credit for their fine displays in the middle of the park, while Muller was back to his best chasing down every ball in attack.

Shakhtar's performance

It's difficult to criticise an underdog who lose a player in just the third minute of the game, but there's no doubt that Mircea Lucescu will be disappointed with some of his men. The defence stuck to their task well, and despite battling impressively, it always looked inevitable that Bayern would find a way through.

However, there were concerns elsewhere on the pitch, with the midfield wasting possession on the rare occasions that Bayern did allow the visitors to launch counters. Luiz Adriano, Taison and Alex Teixeira just couldn't get involved in the match further up the pitch, and it was clear that there was no obvious gameplan after Kucher's dismissal. It was certainly a night to forger for the Ukrainian side.

Thomas Muller: It's not easy to choose from the performances on the Bayern side. Ribery may have taken this honour had he not limped off before the hour mark, but Muller is a worthy winner. The forward's style may not always win many admirers but there is no doubting his effectiveness. Muller took the penalty to get the ball rolling before scoring his second with a calm finish in the second half. Off the ball he was a menace, too, and Shakhtar could not handle his direct approach.

Biggest gaffe

Kucher won't be getting too much sleep. In just the third minute the defender decided to dive into a challenge on Gotze, who saw the tackle coming and went down to win the penalty. It proved to be a costly mistake as the defender received a red card and sent his side on the way to an emphatic defeat.

Referee performance

Scottish official William Collum will tell the Shakhtar fans that he had to send off Kucher, and it would be difficult to argue with him. On a night when Bayern dominated he managed to avoid stealing the headlines.
