Sports Mole takes a closer look at Bayern Munich's 1-0 victory over CSKA Moscow in the Champions League.

Bayern Munich recorded their second successive victory in Group E by beating CSKA Moscow 1-0 on Tuesday night.

Thomas Muller's penalty in the 22nd minute would be the difference between the two sides as Bayern condemned CSKA to another defeat in the Champions League.

Below, Sports Mole takes a look at the key talking points from the match.

Was the result fair?

The result may not have always been certain, but it has to be said that Bayern deserved the victory. As expected, they dominated possession from the first whistle, despite not always being allowed the space they crave by CSKA. If the hosts had taken one of their chances before the break, it could have been a different story, but Bayern always appeared to have enough in the tank to secure all three points.

CSKA Moscow's performance

CSKA head coach Leonid Slutsky may feel his side missed an opportunity tonight. Despite seeing very little of the ball, the home side had a number of excellent opportunities to claim an equaliser before the break. Bayern would surely have found another gear had they been pegged back, but CSKA would have grown in confidence if Zoran Tosic or the lively Ahmed Musa did not waste their respective chances.

Bayern Munich's performance

It was hardly a vintage display from Bayern, and not many will reflect on this match should Pep Guardiola lead his side to glory in the competition, but it was a very good away performance. The visitors controlled the tempo of the game easily thanks to Philipp Lahm and Xabi Alonso, despite seeing a number of their creative players find life difficult in the final third of the pitch. After seeing CSKA miss good chances at 1-0, Bayern responded to restrict the room on offer to the hosts and comfortably see out the win.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Philipp Lahm: On a night when his more attack-minded teammates struggled to enjoy as much success, Lahm was the main creative force behind Bayern's performance. He seems to be relishing the opportunity to play in midfield alongside Alonso, and contributed at both ends of the pitch to guide his team to victory.

Biggest gaffe

Tosic had the chance to equalise late in the first half after Musa had seen his effort saved by Neuer. However, the Serbian winger failed to show any composure inside the box as he fired a wayward effort over the crossbar.

Referee performance

Replays proved that Mario Fernandes initially made contact with Mario Gotze on the edge of the box in the 22nd minute, but Scottish referee William Collum correctly pointed to the spot after the CSKA defender had a second swipe at his rival inside the area. CSKA supporters may not agree, but it was decent night for the man in the middle.

What next?

CSKA Moscow: Slutsky's side are back in action against Kuban Krasnodar on October 18.

Bayern Munich: The Bundesliga champions host Hannover on Saturday afternoon.
