Bayern Munich defender Holger Badstuber will undergo knee surgery on Monday to repair a torn cruciate knee ligament, the club confirmed today.
Badstuber suffered the injury in yesterday's match with Bundesliga holders Borussia Dortmund after colliding with Mario Gotze during the 1-1 draw.
The German international could be out for up to six months, news that Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge admitted came as a bitter blow.
He told the club's official website: "Naturally, it's put a real dampener on our evening. He said his studs got stuck in the turf and he felt it go immediately."
Munich are eight points clear at the top of the table and have also secured their place in the last 16 of the Champions League following a fine start to the season.
