Nicklas Bendtner nets a late equaliser before Wolfsburg beat Bayern Munich on penalties to win the DFL-Supercup.

Wolfsburg have won the DFL-Supercup after beating Bayern Munich 5-4 in a penalty shootout following Nicklas Bendtner's last-gasp equaliser.

Bayern almost took the lead inside eight minutes at the Volkswagen Arena when Thiago Alcantara's header fell into the path of Jerome Boateng before the defender's strike rattled the woodwork.

Die Wolfe came close themselves early on, with Kevin de Bruyne teeing up Vieirinha before his fizzing shot flew narrowly wide of the post.

De Bruyne was inches away from breaking the deadlock midway through the first half after a rasping shot from 25 yards wasn't far off-target.

The Belgian went even closer to putting Wolfsburg ahead on the stroke of half time after he nodded the ball beyond the onrushing Manuel Neuer, but couldn't steer his subsequent effort on target.

His miss was punished just after the interval when Douglas Costa's cross from the byline rebounded off Robert Lewandowski before Arjen Robben fired the loose ball into the back of the net.

On the hour mark, Die Wolfe squandered another chance to break through the Bayern backline after De Bruyne's defence-splitting pass found Bas Dost with space to shoot, only for the forward to hit his shot straight at Neuer.

However, Wolfsburg did equalise in the last minute of the game as Bendtner got across Boateng at the near post to score from close range and force a penalty shootout.

Xabi Alonso was the only player to miss for either side as he placed his spot kick down the middle, only to be denied by Belgian shot-stopper Koen Casteels.

That meant that Bendtner would be the hero, scoring Wolfsburg's fifth penalty to win the first domestic silverware of the season.
